There's no denying the blistering tempo and signature sound of Bo Diddley's guitar playing in 'you can't judge a book by the cover'. Diddley's unique take on rock n' roll as present on this track is of the no nonsense kind: simplistic lyrics that are proclaimed, not crooned; vocals greatly projected with a rhythm and blues twang; and a raw but buoyant guitar sound.
It's a track that presents itself entirely without complexity, yet it possesses a power that would have wowed live audiences in 1962, and paved the way for many other artists to follow suit.
