Ah the Spector sound… Genius.

One of the first tracks Phil Spector produced/co-wrote for The Crystals and what a tune. There's a real grandiose nature to this track courtesy of Spector which takes the late 50′s – early 60′s 'female vocal group' sound to a new level and you realise this at the 20 second mark when the full weight of the band drops in alongside the gangy and red-lining vocals.

The Crystals - There's No Other (Like My Baby)

You can hear Spector's innovative use of the studio shining through on this recording. Everything is clearly pushed through at new heights in terms of input volumes and this in turn provides a gritty compression to the sound. The drum sound is also something completely new and before unheard. It sounds as if the kit, particularly the snare, has been recorded in an empty Madison Square Garden which flies in the face of the conventionally tight lipped, dry as a bone drum sound of the era.
