I now know where William Shatner got the inspiration for his recent-ish recitation of Pulp's 'Common people'.

Although, if comparison is to be made I must say that Shatner sounds far more certain of the words than Walter Brennan does on 'old river' (believe it or not, a top five hit on the 1962 billboard singles chart). Brennan sounds anxious and borderline senile in his fumbling over each phrase. Anxious and elderly as crossed with the Sheriff of Nottingham from the animated film version of Robin Hood may be the best way I can describe Brennan's voice here.

He is oddly backed by the pleasant country/big-band tones of the Johnny Mann Singers.
