Donovan covers Buffy Sainte-Marie

August 15th, 1965 - Folksinger Donovan released a cover of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier". Sainte-Marie, a Canadian songwriter, wrote and recorded the song for her debut album It's My Way in 1964.

She said of the song, "I wrote "Universal Soldier" in the basement of The Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early sixties. It's about individual responsibility for war and how the old feudal thinking kills us all."

Donovan included "Universal Soldier" as the title track on his August 1965 EP, along with "The Ballad of a Crystal Man", "The War Drags On" and a cover of Bert Jansch's "Do You Hear Me Now?"
