Manfred Mann release EP featuring Dylan's "With God On Our Side"

June 18th, 1965 - British band, Manfred Mann released their EP entitled The One In The Middle. The EP included a cover of Bob Dylan's "With God Our Side", which, according to the liner notes, was because Dylan had attended their concert and said they were "real groovy".

"The words. With the possible exception of 'Masters Of War', another Dylan number, it is the finest anti-war song ever written." Paul Jones

At the time, Dylan's version had been banned from radio play. In June 1965, when when Paul Jones was asked by Keith Altham of NME why the song was chosen for the EP, he replied, "The words. With the possible exception of 'Masters Of War', another Dylan number, it is the finest anti-war song ever written." Notably, the Manfred Mann cover leaves out the verse "I've learned to hate the Russians, all through my whole life. If another war comes, it's them we must fight."
