This tune was recorded during the sessions for Dylan's first album but it somehow hit the cutting room floor and then surfaced many years later on one of Bob's many bootleg/b-side releases.

'He Was A Friend Of Mine' perfectly captures Dylan and his early dealings with a sparse delicacy that would later hit full stride on tracks like 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' and 'Don't Think Twice It's Alright'. His voice wavers between a sort of sheepish restraint and a gravelly road on the turn of each verse here, and this demonstrates that at this early point in his career, Bobby, although clearly in touch with the depth of the lyric, hadn't quite found his own voice yet.
